Odds and ends.....
Butterflies add color and motion to my yard.To keep them coming back, I offer watermelon. (above) I cut the melon into four pieces and leave it on a picnic table in my yard. The fruit is covered with butterflies for days. Even hummingbirds are attracted to it. Every few days, I gather up what's left of the melon pieces and add them to my compost bin. The butterflies sometimes come along for the free ride, covering me as well as the rinds!

The above article was from the July 1998 issue of "birds and Blooms"magazine.
I have a leftover slice of watermelon in the fridge. . . I think I'll try this!

This was written by an 83 year old woman to her friend.
I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.
I’m not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I’m not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.
"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.
I’m not sure what others would’ve done had they known that they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, or for whatever their favorite food was. I’m guessing; I’ll never know.
It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.
"People say true friends must always hold hands, but true friends don’t need to hold hands because they know the other hand will always be there."

Where the buffalo roam....
Alex and I went over to the County Park a while back to feed the ducks and just spend some time in the sun.
Before we left ,we stopped to see the buffalo. . . . . . . .
Did you say buffalo?
Yes, buffalo in Pennsylvania. We have had a game preserve with buffalo in our County park for as long as I can remember. Not a common sight to see in this part of the states !
As a little girl, I always look forward to the County Fair in August. There would be buildings full of exhibits from the local farms.
Massive pumpkins that weighed 100 pounds, canning goods and fresh pies with first place ribbons, and a chance to see the buffalo.
Enjoy your day....we did !!!

This week's theme is " Hobby" .....
I guess sewing would be the longest running hobby that I've had. When my children were small, it was clothing. Later my interest turned to decorating. . . pillows, curtains etc.
Then I went through my cross-stitch phase, making samplers and wedding accessories.
I've dabbled in a wide range of crafts (I worked at Michael's crafts for 7 years!)
Lately, I've become interested in antiquing and visiting thrift stores, looking for tea cups and pots, which I collect.
Of course, most of my free time is spent blogging.....with occasional stops at the book store.
and then there's gardening, jewelry making, ceramics and don't forget photography and there's so much more !!!
Soon in another post, I tell you about a hobby that has turned into a small business for Hubby and me!

Where's the dressing?
Alex: Grandma, I'm going to help you rake and fill the wheelbarrow.
Gram: That would be o.k...... I'll take all the help I can get.
Alex: If you mash it all down, you can get a lot more weeds in here.
Alex: Hey!...I think this is how they make salad!

Heads or Tails....
This week's theme is "luck "
I've never believed in luck and I think that everything happens for a reason. But I have been fortunate in a few ways.
My husband has been in sales for many years, and worked for a company that offered sales clubs according to the amount of product he sold. We won 7 of those trips, for his high sales scores, over 16 years.
Phoenix
San Diego
Boca Raton
Orlando (twice)
Honolulu..... And Maui
These trips were all expenses paid and first class all the way! I wouldn't say we were lucky, but that I have a smart hubby that is very good at what he does for a living!!

" Hitsville U.S.A. "
Hitsville, U.S.A. was the nickname given to Motown records in Detroit, Michigan. The building was purchased by Barry Gordy for $800 in 1959. The business grew from a small start-up business in to the largest independent record company in the world. Gordy took local kids from the neighborhood and turned them into some of the biggest singing stars of that time.
So, check out the Motown website for more interesting facts about Hitsville U.S.A.
Show and Tell Friday....
On our last trip, we stopped at an antique co-op and I found this cream antique-looking plate holder and a little bird votive that matches.
Kelli, it also matches your tea cup stand in your Show and Tell post!!
I also found this china cup and saucer for my collection.
At the co-op, I also found this little amber hobnail vase. It matches this shoe that's very old. It was my Grandmother's.

Heartprints
(Author Unknown)
Whatever our hands touch--
We leave fingerprints!
On walls, on furniture,
On doorknobs, dishes, books,
As we touch we leave our identity.
Oh, Lord, please where ever I go today,
Help me leave heartprints!
Heartprints of compassion Of understanding and love.
Heartprints of kindness and genuine concern.
May my heart touch a lonely neighbor
Or a runaway daughter,
Or an anxious mother,
Or, perhaps, a dear friend!
I shall go out today
To leave heartprints,
And if someone should say "I felt your touch,"
May that one sense be...
YOUR LOVE, LORD Touching through ME.
Thanks again to "MM" for thinking that I'm a " Good schmoozer " and now I will pass it on to my friend Myrna over at cherish... the word!

Sarah ~
Graduation day has finally come, and I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am !
For three long years now, you have juggled schedules, dealt with migraines, and stuffed your head with volumes of information…words that I couldn’t even pronounce, let alone define.
I know that there were times when you felt so overwhelmed that you wondered if it was worth it. Between classes, full days at the hospital, and trying to spend quality time with Alex and Frank, you had little time left for yourself.
But you stuck with it….. and we knew you could do it, and do it well.
Since you were a little girl, you have always had a soft heart and caring spirit for those with physical needs. And when you speak about your patients, I hear a genuine concern for them in your voice. I believe that God has given you a gift and this is where you are called to be. Use your smile and out-going personality to help them through a very difficult time. They will benefit by having someone so compassionate to care for them.
So now you are ready to take on the world. Give the best you have to give and reap the rewards of your labor!
I love you…..Mom

" be steddy and Ready "
I love the line that says "be steddy and ready ".
The next day Pappy was telling Alex that " little Grandma"...( that's what the grandchildren call my Mom because she's only 4 ft.- 9 in. tall ) was the neighborhood star softball player when she was a kid. Without missing a beat, Alex responded with "Maybe little Grandma could be your coach"!
I'll have to ask her for some pointers, if she can remember...... Little grandma is 89.
